Peilstein offers very interesting climbing, only 30 to 45 minutes from Vienna, almost no hiking time, and a Heuriger (guest house where they sell their home made wine and food) right next to the parking lot. What else would be more interesting? How about more than 450 routes, most sports, ranging from 1 to 11 in grades (see climbing grades conversion chart) and 8 to 60m in height. The rock is similar to the southern France cliffs and can get just as hot on a sunny summer day! The place is favored by climbers from Vienna, but many Czech , Hungarian and Slovak climbers come to spend the weekend, camping at the parking lot, right next to the Heuriger.
The cliff is separated in 26 sections (from A to Z), all mostly part of it, and a few stunning outcroppings right next to it .The guide book we use is Peilsteinführer by Ewald Gauster 1994 (available from local Vienna outdoors and climbing stores), but we have seen people with other (probably more recent) ones. Some sections of the cliffs are closed during the bird mating season, please respect the posted signs.
Sections we have climbed:
M, Vegetarierwand, Stösserwand
T, Kleiner Zinnenkessel
V, Grosser Zinnenkessel
